What is K9 glass and what is the difference between K9 glass and ordinary glass?
What is K9 glass?
- K9 glass is a kind of glassmade of K9 material, mainly used in optical coating and other fields.
- K9 glass is an optical glass due to its exceptional clarity. Consequently, numerous manufacturing facilities have adopted K9 material as a raw material, and the processed productsare called crystal glass products.
- The composition of K9 glass is as follows: SiO2=69.13%, B2O3=10.75%, BaO=3.07%, Na2O=10.40%, K2O=6.29%, As2O3=0.36%
- Optical constantof K9 glass: refractive index=1.51630, dispersion=0.00806, abbe number=64.06
- The national standard for optical glass is classified by Abbe number, and the glass with Abbe number ≥50 is crown glass, which is represented by “K”; Glass with an Abbe number <50 is flint glass, which is represented by “F”.Under these two categories, the optical glass is further subdivided into 18 categories and 141 brands, represented by symbols of chemical element and light “Q”, heavy “Z”, special “T” as prefixes, and numbers as suffixes, such as, QF8(light flint), BaK11(barium crown), K9(crown).
- Generally, crown glass belongs to alkali silicate system, while the vast majority of flint glass belongs to plumbum silicate system.
- To sum up, K9 glass is a kind of optical material with excellent performance. As the substrate of laser film, its characteristics and ability to resist laser damage directly affect the performance of high-power laser film, especially for laser anti-reflection film and polarization film.
What is the difference between k9 glass and ordinary glass
K9 glass and ordinary glass are very similar in appearance, but they are two completely different substances. The main differences between them are as follows:
- Different materials: K9 glass is a crystal of silica, while ordinaryglass is just a molten mixture containing silica.
- Different effects: the ordinary glass only has a decorative effect, whilethe K9 glass has a special effect of piezoelectricityand maintaining health in addition to the decorative effect.
- Differentprices: the unit price of K9 glass is several times or even dozens of times higher than that of ordinary glass.
- Different physical properties
(1) K9 glass is characterized by a high hardness (Mohs level 7), which is higher than that of ordinary glass (Mohs level 5.5). This difference in hardness allows the crystal to scratch ordinary glass but not to do so with K9 glass.
(2) K9 glass has good thermal conductivity. The tip of the tongue licking K9 glass can produce a sensation of coolness, whereas licking ordinary glass evokes a sensation of warmth.
- Whendistinguished by a polarizer, K9 glass can transmit light, while ordinary glass can not transmit light.
(4) High-quality K9 glass appears transparent and clear when observed under light. There are no small bubbles or water lines inside it, so it is not cheap. Consequently, the price of K9 glass correlates with its quality.
- Different processing technology: ordinary glass can be hot molded, resulting in material and labor savings with low cost. In contrast, K9 glass is a type of crystal that cannot be reformed after heating and melting, thus it necessitates cold processing methods such as cutting and grinding.
